Vacation 2k11: Newport, RI

Newport, RI

Newport was my favorite.  I could definitely live there.  Mom would make fun of me the whole trip because every place we went (with the exception of Long Island because I didn't like the traffic), I would say, "I could definitely see myself living here."

One of my favorite parts of the trip was taking the ferry from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport, CT.  You're probably like, "Perrin, really? It's just a boat."  But it was more than a boat...it was a boat you could put cars in.  So see why it was a favorite? Ok, probably not.  I loved it because there was so much excitement all around.  People traveling from NY to CT to visit people, to see baseball games, to tour landmarks.  I think that's why I have an obsession with airports too.  There's so much excitement all around you.  Little kids would lean over the side to look down at what they could find in the water and the kids next to us were writing in their "Travel Journals" about the sights around them while their grandpa gave them a lesson on what the different colored bouys meant.  Ok, enough about the ferry now. It was fun, just trust me.

love me some sailboats.

On the way we made a semi-quick stop in Mystic, CT.  We had heard a lot about it and wanted to check it out for ourselves.  It reminded me of a nautical Colonial Williamsburg.  We walked around briefly and then we all quickly realized we needed food.  Seafood that is.  We found a cute, bright turqoise seafood shack on the water and ate the best, and cheapest, seafood during our whole trip.

See that house in the back? Yup, it's mine.

We finally arrived at the Harborside Inn, a.k.a. the cutest place ever, around 3 on Monday afternoon.  After unpacking and admiring our adorable room, we decided to head to one of the mansions before they closed.  We chose Rosecliff first.  Hint: If you want to see the mansions and do more than 1 of them, definitely just go ahead and get the 5 pack of tickets because they are such a better deal than the 2 pack!  Rosecliff was the mansion that scenes from The Great Gatsby and 27 Dresses were filmed.  Actually, out of all 5 we toured, my mom and I agree that Rosecliff was our favorite.

Iced tea and fresh baked cookies available whenever you want...that's what i'm talkin' about.

On Cliff Walk!

After walking some of Cliff Walk, we changed and dined at The Clarke Cooke House located right on Bannister's Wharf.  It was a perfect evening with the open windows next to our table letting in a gentle breeze as we watched the people below walk by and we ate our scrumptious seafood (yes, more seafood).  Ok, I lied.  I actually hated my food this night.  I ordered an Asian Sesame Rare Seared Tuna Salad thinking that I could handle the pink color of the fish.  But I couldn't do it.  I tried multiple bites, but it was not appetizing to me at all.  Dad's lobster was delicious.  First time I had tried lobster and I give it a double thumbs up.  Mom's fresh caught Cod was also delecatable.

calamari...yum!

More Clam Chowder!

Cod!

See the pink? That's why I couldn't eat it.

We walked along the harbor to see the massive sailboats and visited the shops lining it.  Once back to our cozy inn, I sat on the balcony overlooking the water and the city with a good book, a blanket, and a cup of hot tea.  Life was really good at the moment.  My favorite evening of the whole trip, hands down.

Oops, sorry about the massive overload of pictures! I can't contain myself sometimes.

Tomorrow's post: Newport, RI Part 2.  There was too much to tell about Newport, even though we were there for 24 hours, but it's my favorite so I have to share everything.

Vacation 2k11: Glen Cove, New York

The Gold Coast!

After stopping at lots of tolls, pushing our way through all the traffic in NYC, and making a quick lunch stop at a Chinese place, we finally arrived to our stop for the night, Glen Cove Mansion.  This mansion was beautiful.  The grounds around the mansion were just a pretty as the inside of the mansion.  Most of the original building stayed in tact when the mansion underwent a renovation in 2004.  We enjoyed our afternoon reading by the pool and later taking a bikeride along the Gold Coast.  About halfway into the bikeride my seat broke, so my wonderful Dad came to my rescue and rode my bike back for me! He's so great.

Later in the evening we enjoyed a yummy dinner at a nearby restaurant overlooking the sound, and then went to Pub 1910 on the upstairs floor of the mansion and enjoyed some drinks and an ah-mazing chocolate mousse cake. Yum!

Isn't the food display so good?! I was very impressed!

Dad's chicken sliders.

Mom's fish tacos.

After chowing down a delicious omlet and fresh fruit we were on the road again.  Where this time? Newport!! Read about our adventures in Newport tomorrow!

Vacation 2k11: Lancaster, PA

We each had something we really wanted to do on this trip.  For Dad, it was to relax and read a book for at least 3 days.  For me, it was to go to Newport, RI and tour the mansions.  And for mom...well mom wanted to see a play at the reknown Sight and Sound Theater.  If you've never heard of this theater, it is an enormous theater that produces shows based off a character in the Bible.  It's pretty much like Bible Broadway.  But it's so cool!  I mean you've got the music, the costumes, the set, Joseph flying over your head...everything is really well done!  If you're ever close by to Lancaster, defnitely check it out!

The play we got to see was the story of Joseph.  It was phenomenal!  The curtain arose to Joseph telling his many brothers about all the dreams God had given and his brothers' reaction by selling him off and closed with Joseph, his wife, and sons reuniting with Joseph's dad and brothers.  What happens in between you'll have to either 1. read it in the Bible or 2. go see the play for yourself.  I would suggest both. I feel like I know the story of Joseph SO much better now just because of this play.  Anyways, enough about the play...I could go on for days!

Before the play we went to a smorgesboard restaurant, The Hershey Farm Inn and Restaurant.  I had never experience a smorgasbord before, but I came to find out it was pretty much like a buffet.  Big whoop!  But eating delicious Amish bread made the smorgasbord restaurant definitely worth it!

My absolute favorite part of Lancaster? Seeing all the traffic having to hault and go around the Amish people riding their horses and carriages on their special lane in the road! So cool!

Here are some pictures from our quick trip to Lancaster!

The Sight and Sound Theater from far away.

It's kind of hard to read, but so funny!  Also, look up the 7 ingredients in Deut. 8:8...I don't think you'll want to eat it after you know what's in it!
Tomorrow's stop: Glen Cove, New York on Long Island!

Vacation 2k11: Winchester, VA

Today is our first day home since our adventure up north.  It was a crazy 10 days, but overall a very fun vacation.  There is so much to tell, so I'm going to break it up in multiple posts.

On Friday, after loading up the car, we took off around 11 (only an hour after when we wanted to leave).  After a quick stop at a fabric store in Richmond (mom finally found one she liked for her new office) and a sandwich from Arby's we continued to Winchester, VA for a night with my grandparents.  The whole family was there to celebrate my Uncle Mark's birthday.  We all sat around the table and shared a yummy feast for dinner and heard stories from Pollyjack's cruise to Alaska and saw the blueprints for Uncle Mark and Liz's new house (which is amazing I might add).  By the way, Pollyjack is a term my sister and I use for our grandparents.  When we were younger we would obviously always here people refer to them by their first names, Polly and Jack, and so we thought they were each named Pollyjack and Pollyjack.  And since then, it's stuck.

Later that night, my mom, Liz, and I sat and listened to the stories exchanged by my grandparents, uncle, and dad from their childhood.  Some stories were funny, others were kind of sad.  Most of them were about silly injuries my dad and uncle had obtained when they were younger.  By the time that was over we were all ready for bed.  It took me forever to fall asleep that night because I couldn't stop thinking of all the places I was going to get to see that week!

Happy Birthday Uncle Mark!

Isn't he cute?!

The 3 generations...My Granddad (son of Roy Perrin Duvall), Gregory Perrin Duvall, and me, Perrin Elizabeth Duvall!  My name comes from my great granddad, Roy Perrin.
Tomorrows post is all about our next stop, Lancaster, PA (a.k.a. Amish Country)!
